JJs Apollo Beach Saturday Night

It’s hard to find decent Afro-eccentric nightlife in the Tampa Bay area, outside of Ybor City or SOHO. So when a google search revealed an RnB night at this nearby sportsbar, I had to stop in and check them out.

Atmosphere

Aesthetically, there’s nothing really to rave about when it comes to JJ’s. To describe the place, think run of the mill Sports bar that you’d find in any American Shopping Plaza. There’s no fancy lighting, themed decor, or frivolous display. The bar has the essentials for the working class patrons who frequent—a few tables for dining, a medium sized bar, a pool table, and a Patio. I will however, brag about how spectacularly clean the establishment was (including its bathroom).

People

The patrons on this particular night were friendly, albeit a bit reserved. I got the sense that the place was filled with regulars, as most people were only chatting amongst themselves. This disposition was also observed from the bartenders, whom I essentially had to pry away from their favored customers, in order to get a drink for myself on several occasions.

Prices

I found JJ’s to be a bit pricey for the experience they delivered. My go-to–Henny/Sprite was a whopping $18 per, and a Corona was $7 dollars. I assess that they are only able to command such prices because they are basically the only bar open in the Apollo Beach area after 11PM.

Music

What JJ’s has done exceptionally well is its selection of DJs. The music was exactly what I been looking for when it comes to Rnb. The DJs touched all niches of the genre dependent on the crowd they were given, so the vibe is always good. If I were the owner, I’d expand the dance floor and encourage more line dance music, but that’s just me. Even still, 10/10 for music easily.

The Verdict

If you are located in the Southeastern Tampa Bay area, and have an itch for some Saturday night RnB vibes; JJ’s might just have the scratch that you need. However, the place isn’t designed to impress and expect to wait a tad bit longer than usual for your cocktail.

I give JJs a 6.5/10
